Expectations

Community Agreements

Welcome to the studio. We're a shared space, so a little care from everyone keeps it a good place to make things.

Here's what we ask of each other.

Be kind. Everyone here is learning, including the people who've been at it for years. Bring patience and a sense of humor.

Everyone belongs. We don't tolerate discrimination or harassment of any kind. If something feels off, tell a staff member. We'll handle it.

Cheer, don't compare. This is not a competition. Celebrate what other people make and save the advice for when someone asks for it. Headphones on usually means "in the zone."

Hands off other people's work. Look, admire, ask questions. Don't touch.

Leave it better than you found it. Clean as you go and leave your space ready for the next person.

Keep it mellow. Take calls outside or keep them short.

If someone isn't holding up their end, we'll start with a friendly reminder. Repeated or serious issues can mean losing studio access.

Studio Guidelines

Getting in

  • Open studio is for current students and members. You'll have to complete a six-week class at Enkindle or need prior approval before joining as a member.

  • Bring your own apron and towels. Clay finds everything. Forgot it? Borrow one, just don't make it a habit.

  • Book your time in Wix and arrive during your slot. Plan to be out by close time. Unlimited members may stay late with permission.

  • Class time is class time. Please don't arrive more than 10 minutes early or linger after your slot ends. Teachers use that time to set up demos, reset the room, and eat lunch. If you're in a class, wrap up at the stated end time so the room is ready for the next group. Members, if a class is running, the studio isn't open for you until it's done.

  • If you're the last one out, turn off both lights, set the thermostat to 74, make sure the wax warmer is unplugged, and check to make sure the door is locked behind you.

Clay and glazes

  • All clay must be purchased in the studio before using.

  • Use studio clay and studio glazes only. Outside materials need staff approval first, and if something damages a kiln shelf, you might be asked to cover the replacement. ($20 drippy pot fee / $100 shelf replacement fee for larger issues)

  • Keep glazes clean: one brush per color, lids back on, and don't thin or mix without asking. Let us know when something's running low.

  • Unplug the wax warmer after use.

  • Studio tools, bats, and materials stay in the studio.

Firing

  • Only staff is allowed in the kiln room. Members must have permission.

  • Sign all pieces.

  • We only fire pieces made here with clay purchased here. Unlimited members may take work home to finish and bring it back

  • Keep glaze off the bottom and at least ¼" up the side.

  • Hollow forms need an air hole.

  • Anything over 12" tall or wide? Talk to us first. Big pieces may cost extra. Unlimited members may go larger.

  • Kilns fire as they fill, so turnaround is usually 1-2 weeks. We can't rush deadlines, and we can't guarantee results. Clay is like that.

  • This is a hobby studio, not a production space. If you're making more than 30 pieces / 50lbs a month, let's chat about a plan.

  • Want something refired? Ask first; there may be a fee.

Cleaning up

  • Clean as you go and give yourself enough time to clean and wrap-up before your time ends.

  • Wet cleaning only: sponges and mops, never sweeping or dry brushing. Clay dust is one thing here that can actually hurt you.

  • No dry sanding indoors. Use water when sanding to trap the clay particles or go outside.

  • Wheels: turn off, then clean the head, splash pan, and floor around you. Return bats and tools where they live.

Storage

  • Studio members get one shelf. Label everything with your name and date, and keep it on your shelf, not someone else's.

  • We clear unlabeled or untouched work after 30 days. Pick up finished work within 30 days of your last class.

  • The studio isn't responsible for lost, broken, or missing items.

The fine print

  • No make-up classes unless we cancel.

  • We may photograph work and artists in the studio for our website or social media. Let us know if you'd rather we didn't.

  • The studio can end a membership at its discretion.

  • These are guidelines and not hard and fast rules. If you have questions just ask! If you forget your apron you can borrow one just try not to make it a habit.

If things go sideways

Most slip-ups are honest mistakes, and we treat them that way. Here's how it usually goes:

  • First, a friendly reminder. Someone on staff will let you know, no big deal.

  • If it keeps happening, we'll have a real conversation and follow up in writing so we're all on the same page.

  • If it continues after that, we may pause or end your membership. We'd rather not, so please don't make us.

A few things skip the ladder:

  • Harassment, threats, theft, or anything that puts someone at risk means immediate removal from the studio.

  • Damage to equipment or kiln shelves isn't a strike, it's a bill. You cover the repair or replacement cost.

Think we got it wrong? Talk to Janna or Noemi. We'll listen.
