Empty Bowl Socials
Want to give back while doing what you love? Help us support the Austin Empty Bowl Project by making bowls that will be donated to fight hunger! We have 2 dates scheduled for throwing and 1 date for glazing. All are welcome! (we can use help making clay balls, glazing, cheering on the wheel throwing, and even hand building) We will need volunteers to trim bowls the day after throwing too!
Three dates are scheduled:
Friday, October 3, 5-9 pm
Sunday, October 26, 5-8 pm
Saturday, November 8, 5-8 pm (FOR GLAZING)
(We will also need volunteers to help trim and glaze bowls)
What to bring:
(optional)
-
Beverage for yourself and a snack to share if you want (THIS IS NOT REQUIRED)
Empty Bowl Requirements:
-
Bowls can be hand built or thrown on the wheel.
-
In general, 1.5 to 2 lbs. of clay will make a good sized bowl. This is a rough guideline.
-
In general, the bowl dimensions when wet, should be a minimum 5 inches wide up to about 8 inches wide. Height can vary.
-
The bowl shape needs to be such that it can contain soup. Ideally they should hold a minimum of 8 ounces of liquid.
-
The bowls shall be finished with a durable and food safe glaze on the inside of the bowl or anywhere that food may touch the bowl, like the rim.
-
Bowls should be signed "AEBP" or "Austin Empty Bowl". No dates when signing the bowl. Other information, such as the potter's name, clay type, etc. is optional.
About the Empty Bowl Project
Potters from all over Central Texas donate bowls of all sizes, shapes, and colors. Restaurants and bakeries donate delicious soups and breads, while musicians donate their time and talent to entertain us. Then, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, friends and families come together to purchase a bowl for $30, have it filled with soup, and enjoy the music. The bowl is yours to keep, as a reminder of those whose bowls are empty. The proceeds go to Meals on Wheels Central Texas’ Meals for Kids, and the Central Texas Food Bank to help sponsor the Kids Cafe Program. Kids Cafe provides a safe, nurturing place where children receive a hot, nutritious dinner, as well as help with homework.
